Tim Robinson: September exercises in futility

Monday, October 10th, 2011

EAST LANSING ? Good. September is over. Thank goodness.

As far as football is concerned, fans dont learn much about their teams this month. If theyre a school in a major conference, they can have a glorifed scrimmage, like Michigan State and Central Michigan did on Saturday. If theyre Central Michigan, they can take the check and make a short drive home.

But if youre a fan wondering what the Spartans will look like next week, when they travel to to face Ohio State, I suspect it will be a lot more like the team they saw against Notre Dame than what they saw against Central Michigan.

Nothing against Central, and the diploma on my wall should prove that, but when the Chippewas have beaten Michigan State, it was through superior coaching and /or a nice dollop of luck, as was the case two years ago.

Central also had Dan LeFevour, arguably its best player ever, a guy ignored by major colleges when he was in high school.

LeFevour is now two years out of school, and the Chippewas have been struggling ever since.

Saturdays starter, Ryan Radcliffe, was pulled after going 7-for-15 passing for 39 yards and an interception in the first half.

His replacement, AJ Westendorp, followed MSU quarterback Kirk Cousins at Holland Christian. On Saturday, after throwing four passes and completing one to a teammate and two more to Michigan State, Westendorp followed Radcliffe to the bench.

The final was 45-7, and it wasnt remotely that close.

Which brings one to the question: How do these games help either team? I mean, besides giving MSU fans something to cheer and a check for Central?

Ohio State is going to bring a whole new level of talent and animosity the Spartans will be facing than this preseason, if you want to call it that, hasnt begun to address.

Put another way, next week could very well look like last week because the Spartans have been tested one in four games.

And thats not going to help against Ohio State in the Big Ten opener.

As its popularity has grown, ticket prices have gone up beyond the base of faithful alumni.

A lot of the new fans arent interested in a quality schedule outside of Notre Dame when the weather is nice in Michigan.

A lot of the new fans arent interested in a quality schedule outside of Notre Dame when the weather is nice in Michigan.

So, to please the fans, Big Ten schools schedule opponents they are fairly sure they can compete with.

In doing that, however, they risk not having players develop against quality competition, so when the yards get tough in October, only then, almost two months after practice began, do we begin to see exactly how good, or not, a team truly is.

And that doesnt seem like a good deal for anyone.

UK hold 1st Olympic safety exercises since riots

Sunday, October 9th, 2011

We are going through the whole gamut – from food poisoning to terrorism through to heat waves and rail disruption, he said in an interview. We have to understand how we manage the games in those situations. This is the first major one since the riots.

The unrest flared in early August after an initially peaceful protest in London over the fatal shooting of a man by police turned violent.

Thousands of rioters rampaged through London and other major cities, burning and looting shops and buildings as police struggled to contain the countrys worst unrest since the 1980s.

We are still reviewing everything post-riots to make sure we have learned the lessons, Bonthron said.

London was already preparing a massive security operation for the Olympics, but most of the attention had been on the threat of international terrorism until the outbreak of spontaneous unrest, which led to thousands of arrests.

We recognize we didnt always get it right during the rioting, Bonthron said at an Olympics planning conference. We are reassessing plans in light of what happened during the riots to make sure the resources we have … match the risk.

About 12,000 police officers will be on duty each day of the July 27-Aug. 12 games, which have a security budget of 475 million pounds ($732 million).

The latest in a series of security exercises, which ends on Friday, allows the police, government and games organizers to test how their infrastructure could cope with an emergency during the Olympics.

Its a simulation where people go through and exercise and test communications, test what sort of responses we need, what sort of information flows we would need … to make sure everyone understand their games-time roles, Bonthron said.

Its focused on the response to an incident that could be terrorism or it could be something more minor that could affect the games.

Britains international image took a blow during the riots, and a publicity campaign was launched Thursday to promote the country globally.

Peace out and rock on: ‘Punk Yoga’ seeks flexibility of both body and mind

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

CLEVELAND, OHIO — When it comes to achieving bliss, pan flutes and sitars dont cut it for everyone. Some people need something a little heavier.

Lyz Bly, for instance, an instructor at The Studio Cleveland, caters to the alternative fitness crowd with Punk Yoga, a class flipping traditional modes of yoga practice on their heads. Instead of calming down and turning inward, her objectives are to rile up, peace out and rock on.

Its a radically unique vision, guided by bold principles both musical and philosophical. Personally, its not for me, but I can see why many find it refreshing.

To be honest, I wasnt sure what to expect when I stopped by The Studio, a year-old facility on the East bank of the Flats (thestudiocleveland.com). Not being a punk insider myself, I envisioned everything from beer-stained yoga mats to moshing.

But the reality, while eccentric, was far more tame. In many respects, in fact, Punk Yoga resembled every other Vinyasa class Ive ever encountered. No doubt the atmosphere would have been different had I visited the other venue where Bly teaches, Beachland Ballroom, but the exercises themselves were all totally familiar.

Theres a big difference, of course, in mentality. Where traditional forms of yoga stress passivity and flexibility of mind and body, the punk version aims to incite action and discontent.

Youre supposed to channel the urge to try new poses and deeper stretches into questioning societal norms. The day I visited for an abbreviated, one-on-one version of the standard 75-minute class, Bly kept repeating the mantra destroy all monsters, the name of a notable punk band from the 1970s and 80s. Occasionally, too, she let slip a swear word, further and humorously distinguishing herself from mainstream yogis.

Still, where Punk departed most markedly from traditional yoga classes was in the music. Instead of soothing Indian or New Wave sounds, the play-list consisted of Tune-Yards, Modest Mouse, and HotChaCha. Bly kept the volume low, and the songs werent angry, but the contrast between the music and the relaxed state we were trying to achieve was jolting.

Turns out, its all deliberate. Instead of promoting tranquility, the soundtrack is an obstacle to be overcome, a distraction to be fought. The idea being that if you can concentrate and stay calm amidst wailing guitars and voices, you can keep your focus in our busy, noisy world.

Sounds great in theory, but in practice, I couldnt quite destroy the monsters. Maybe because Im a classical guy, or its my job to analyze everything I hear, but I had a hard time tuning out the stimulus from the speakers.

Luckily, I didnt have to exert much brain-power on the actual exercises. Every command Bly gave us, I knew how to follow.

I may have exceptionally tight shoulders and hamstrings, but I can muddle my way through downward facing dog, warrior pose one, and the cobra. I also felt at home in the final moments, when Bly called for a traditional, quiet shavasana, complete with aromatic oils.

But it wasnt the music or the exercises I liked best about Punk Yoga. No, my favorite aspect was the welcoming attitude.

One thing I didnt have to worry about: my performance. Bly came around frequently to tweak my posture or help me into a pose, but not once did she critique my abilities or cause me to feel embarrassed. Now thats a revolution I want to join.

Fleetly joins the fitness gamification parade with a mobile and web app

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

Fleetly is launching a new app today that analyzes your fitness goals and motivates you to reach them. The app is part of a larger trend of gamification, where developers use game-like tasks to get people to do things they wouldnt ordinarily want to do, like exercise.

Rivals such as Basis and Striiv are coming up with devices that monitor your movements and gamify fitness in the process. But Fleetly is one of the companies that plans to leverage the smartphones people already have, rather than get them to buy another gadget.

Fleetly can benchmark you changing fitness level and challenge you to compete for bragging rights on leaderboards. It can tell you if you have hit a plateau, based on time exercised, weight lifted, or distance run and then provide recommendations on how to do better. The app is available for free on the web and on the iPhone at Fleetly.com/ios.

The app works for all exercises, from weight training to long-distance running, said Fleetly founder Geoff Pitfield, and it helps athletes at all levels.

Pitfield is an amateur triathlete and was inspired to create Fleetly during his initial training. He wanted to track his progress, but nothing supported his variety of activities. So he started making an app that fits in with the trends of a quantified self, feedback loops, and gamification.

Fleetly tracks your exercises, provides an ongoing numerical rating of your current fiscal level, which you can compare with friends or other active people. It rewards you with peer-group recognition and motivates you with challenges, leaderboards and medals. The app comes with more than 200 high-definition instructional videos and 260 exercise instructions. It helps you find and create exercises and workout routines to help you hit goals. It accommodates participation in sports from aerobics to yoga.

The app is compatible with Nikes Nike+ fitness service and Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale. The company is based in Vancouver, Canada, and has an office in New York. The company was founded in 2010 and currently has three employees.

Fleetly  will be compatible in the future with apps such as Foursquare, RunKeeper, and Garmin. Over time, it hopes to collect aggregated information about exercise habits and provide analysis that will help people see where they stand in the grand fitness universe.

Rivals include basic workout loggers such as GymBuddy. There are also apps for recording jogs such as Nike+, DailyMile, Runkeeper, and iMapmyRun. Fleetly hopes to set itself apart by covering the whole range of athletic endeavors. It also focuses on social integration and motivating people through gamification. Points are based on real-world measures such as calories burned, body type, and weight loss. If you slack off, so too does your fitness level.

The app works both online and offline when youre at a gym, where it syncs automatically in the background as soon as it has a data connection. The company is funded by friends, family and angel investors.

Keith Stephens, a Fleetly user, said, “My favorite feature of the app (is the) quick access to see how the competition is doing. That really keeps me on my toes, everyday. Believe it or not, I like to see other people win and achieve their fitness goals, even more than myself. I want you to beat me, but I aint gonna give it to you.”

On average, the early users are using the app 16 times a week. They log nearly 20 different exercises per week. The top participants on the leaderboards are logging over 1,000 points a month, which is like running 35 miles per week. Im inclined to believe theyre making it up.

MEETUP: Improv exercises to free your full potential, followed by a potluck dinner

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

The idea behind the improv exercises we’ll share is to have fun and to get a feel for improv techniques which can be used to maximize ones career, relationships and physical health, and the idea behind the potluck is to not only enjoy good food but also to share with each other as both students and teachers, learning and teaching from each other in creative ways. During the dinner from 6:00 to 8:00 anyone who has taught with us in the past or is considering teaching with us in the future is encouraged to give short micro classes or presentations, or to share informally, whatever they’d like. The dinner can be a time for brainstorming and learning as well as a time to socialize and share a meal.

Those who come for the potluck I’d encourage to bring healthy foods to share. The food can be very simple; a pot of beans or Spanish rice, a salad or hearty bread and cheese, orange juice or a fruit salad. Simple is fine, and healthy food is always great to share and appreciated, for many reasons, by both the body and the mind.

UK holds 1st Olympic safety exercises since riots

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

LONDON (AP) — British authorities are holding their first major planning exercise for the 2012 London Olympics since riots in the capital last month forced police to reassess their security plans for the games.

The government’s emergency committee, known as COBRA, started a three-day exercise on Wednesday to simulate responses to potential crises during the Olympics, detective chief superintendent Alaric Bonthron of the Metropolitan Police told The Associated Press on Thursday.

“We are going through the whole gamut — from food poisoning to terrorism through to heat waves and rail disruption,” he said. “We have to understand how we manage the games in those situations.”

The violence began in early August after the fatal shooting of a man by police in north London. Police struggled to contain the violence that left a trail of looted stores and burned-out buildings across London, Manchester and Birmingham and led to thousands of arrests.

“We are still reviewing everything post-riots to make sure we have learned the lessons,” Bonthron said.

Britain’s image took a hit during the riots, and a global publicity campaign was launched Thursday to promote the country.

London was already preparing a massive security operation for the Olympics, but most of the attention had been on the threat of international terrorism until the outbreak of unrest.

“We recognize we didn’t always get it right during the rioting,” Bonthron said at an Olympics planning conference. “We are reassessing plans in light of what happened during the riots to make sure the resources we have … match the risk.”

About 12,000 police officers will be on duty each day of the July 27-Aug. 12 games, which have a security budget of $732 million.

The latest in a series of security exercises, which end on Friday, allow the police, government and games organizers to test how their infrastructure could cope with an emergency during the Olympics.

“It’s a simulation where people go through and exercise and test communications, test what sort of responses we need, what sort of information flows we would need … to make sure everyone understand their games-time roles,” Bonthron said. “It’s focused on the response to an incident that could be terrorism or it could be something more minor that could affect the games.”

Meanwhile, London authorities have identified 20 potential risks to the 2012 Olympics. The top four include terrorism, serious crime — specifically ticket fraud — protests and natural disasters such as floods or heat waves.

When the eyes of the world are on London next year, Bonthron can see that “it’s a good time to protest.”

The games also could be disrupted by striking workers. Britain’s public sector unions are planning a huge wave of walkouts on Nov. 30 as they resist efforts to reduce spending on pensions.

“It’s one of the factors being built in (to planning),” Bonthron said. “We, in the police, have issues with our communications staff going on strike. So it’s about looking at all eventualities and trying to plan how we resource and keep everything running if there were to be strikes.”

Bonthron spoke after a business conference that considered possible widespread transportation disruption during the games, with parts of London’s road network reserved for Olympic vehicles.

Delegates wondered how London will be able to sustain food and beer deliveries to bars and restaurants, keep cash machines supplied and ensure social workers reach the elderly.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said London can’t afford any major chaos because “Atlanta has never really forgotten the nightmare” of the transportation problems at the 1996 Olympics.

But Johnson said he does not want London to become a “ghost town” next summer with “tumbleweed down Oxford Street” in the city’s shopping hub.

Authorities hope people will avoid nonessential journeys in London and change their work hours to avoid Olympic-related congestion.

“The pressure on the transport network from Olympics-related travel will be very severe in certain parts of London,” Olympic transport minister Theresa Villiers said.

Meanwhile, Johnson also warned that spectators and media attending the Olympics could struggle to use their mobile phones because “there will be maximum strain on the network”.

“We are doing a huge amount of work to ensure there is enough coverage,” he said.
