Tim Robinson: September exercises in futility
Monday, October 10th, 2011EAST LANSING ? Good. September is over. Thank goodness.
As far as football is concerned, fans dont learn much about their teams this month. If theyre a school in a major conference, they can have a glorifed scrimmage, like Michigan State and Central Michigan did on Saturday. If theyre Central Michigan, they can take the check and make a short drive home.
But if youre a fan wondering what the Spartans will look like next week, when they travel to to face Ohio State, I suspect it will be a lot more like the team they saw against Notre Dame than what they saw against Central Michigan.
Nothing against Central, and the diploma on my wall should prove that, but when the Chippewas have beaten Michigan State, it was through superior coaching and /or a nice dollop of luck, as was the case two years ago.
Central also had Dan LeFevour, arguably its best player ever, a guy ignored by major colleges when he was in high school.
LeFevour is now two years out of school, and the Chippewas have been struggling ever since.
Saturdays starter, Ryan Radcliffe, was pulled after going 7-for-15 passing for 39 yards and an interception in the first half.
His replacement, AJ Westendorp, followed MSU quarterback Kirk Cousins at Holland Christian. On Saturday, after throwing four passes and completing one to a teammate and two more to Michigan State, Westendorp followed Radcliffe to the bench.
The final was 45-7, and it wasnt remotely that close.
Which brings one to the question: How do these games help either team? I mean, besides giving MSU fans something to cheer and a check for Central?
Ohio State is going to bring a whole new level of talent and animosity the Spartans will be facing than this preseason, if you want to call it that, hasnt begun to address.
Put another way, next week could very well look like last week because the Spartans have been tested one in four games.
And thats not going to help against Ohio State in the Big Ten opener.
As its popularity has grown, ticket prices have gone up beyond the base of faithful alumni.
A lot of the new fans arent interested in a quality schedule outside of Notre Dame when the weather is nice in Michigan.

So, to please the fans, Big Ten schools schedule opponents they are fairly sure they can compete with.
In doing that, however, they risk not having players develop against quality competition, so when the yards get tough in October, only then, almost two months after practice began, do we begin to see exactly how good, or not, a team truly is.
And that doesnt seem like a good deal for anyone.
