Hubbard sleigh fest holds old-fashioned fun

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Hubbard will hold an old-fashioned sleigh festival along Main Street Sunday, Feb. 26. The festival honors the community’s prairie heritage and marks the return of this popular event after a hiatus of more than 10 years.

A parade of sleighs will wind through the village beginning at 1 pm Up to 20 rigs are expected to participate ranging in size from traditional small “Currier and Ives” cutters to large logging-size sleigh busses. Gov. and Mrs. Lucius Hubbard (1882-1887) will lead the parade as grand marshals.

Sleighs were the only form of winter transportation in this small rural village in the late 1800s, taking people and goods to and from larger population centers such as Verndale and Park Rapids.

Sleigh and wagon rides will be held throughout the day. Drivers will be available to talk about the fine points of sleighing for visitors. Dick Schauer, owner of The Working Horse in Park Rapids, is coordinating horse and sleigh events.

Snow sculpture carving, beginning on Saturday, will continue through Sunday noon. Prizes will be awarded after the parade. Visitors can also enjoy a dog-sledding demonstration nearby.

“Tasty Teamsters Chili” and corn bread will be served in the Community Center by members of the Hubbard United Methodist Church. The center will also be the hub for fun activities for kids, such as a medallion hunt with cash prizes. Clues will be posted on the trees outside the Hilltop Inn and at the Community Center at 11 am, noon and 1 pm

At 2:30 pm, Gov. Hubbard will give a short address at the Long Lake Theater. The event marks the governor’s first appearance in the village bearing his name. His visit is courtesy of the Long Lake Theater.

Visitors can buy a special teamsters mug to fill with hot chocolate and participate as five Park Rapids dining spots vie for “Best Hot Chocolate in the County.” The competition will be held at the large assembly room at the Hilltop Inn beginning at 11:30 am

Well-known country band, County 20, will perform in the Long Lake Theater from 3 to 4 pm following the governor’s address. Musical selections will include several tunes popular in the late1880′s and other tunes by request.

Old-fashioned winter enthusiasts can enjoy mulled wine and hot cider in the theater lounge while listening to the music.

Buttons are on sale for $5 at the Hilltop Inn in Hubbard and in Park Rapids at River Bend, 3rd Street Market, Beagle Books and Summerhill on 2nd. Buttons will help support the festival and also entitle the purchaser to sleigh and wagon rides, hot chocolate, the governor’s address and music.

Children under 12 are admitted free to these events. Buttons will be numbered, with prizes drawn after the parade.

Hubbard is located eight miles south and east of Park Rapids at the intersection of County Roads 6 and 87.

KR1M shops record sales of between RM10,000 and RM15,000 daily

KR1M shops record sales of between RM10,000 and RM15,000 daily

Posted on January 29, 2012, Sunday

BUTTERWORTH: The 1Malaysia People’s Shops (KR1M) nationwide are recording sales of between RM10,000 and
RM15,000 daily as a result of overwhelming response from the public.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Deputy Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim said the success was possible following support from the public for the 27 existing outlets.

“The goods offered at KR1M shops are not only cheap, but their quality is comparable to those in other supermarkets,” she told reporters after launching the Taman Seri Pinang KR1M here yesterday.

She said the government was confident of opening 85 more outlets around the country by year-end and that KR1M’s management was scouting for new locations for them.

“The public want a KR1M shop in their area so that it will be easier for them to buy goods at lower prices. It is also a government mechanisme to ensure theĀ  people are not burdened by increasing cost of living,” said Rohani, adding that 223 sundry shops throughout the country also sold 1Malaysia brand items for the convenience of consumers.

Meanwhile, a buyer Azizah Mohd Aziz, 45, said she managed to save up to 30 per cent on groceries since the KR1M shop opened in Taman Seri Pinang on Nov 23 last year.

“It’s definitely cheap. I can now get all my household items for RM70 instead of RM100 which I used to spend at a regular supermarket,” said the factory worker.

Another consumer, M Surej, 30, concurred, adding that he no longer shopped at supermarkets because the quality of items found at KR1M shops was similar to that of other brands. — Bernama

Thieves target bike shops in Katy, West U.

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Thieves hit two stores of the same bicycle business last week, and the owners hope video footage will help catch the cultprits, KHOU reports.

Burglars have taken bikes from the Bike Barn stores in West University and Katy, KHOU says:

Brandon Bedingfield, the West University manager, said despite locking up almost all of the merchandise, burglars managed to steal four hybrid bikes. Then on Monday, four road bikes from the store in Katy were taken.

Months ago, two men were arrested in connection with bike shop burglaries, in which upwards of $20,000 worth of merchandise was stolen.

Since then, Neil Bremner, the stores’ owner has stepped up security at his six stores and hopes the surveillance video of the crimes will help track down the criminals.

Bikes worth more than $8,000 were taken in the two recent burglaries, the managers say.

Rolling Along: Auto Customization Shops in the US Industry Market Research …

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 28, 2012

The Auto Customization Shops industry has experienced a bumpy road over the past five years. Industry revenue is expected to fall 0.7% annually on average over the five years to 2012, with revenue estimated to grow 2.7% in 2012 to $4.4 billion. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Nima Samadi, the recession has had lingering effects on the industry, with consumers holding off non-essential alterations and customizations of their vehicles. This industry derives its revenue from drivers that pay auto customization shops for certain aftermarket automotive accessories and other customized alterations to their vehicles. Nearly all of these projects are discretionary luxuries, and as such, industry demand and revenue is subject to consumer and discretionary spending levels. In 2009, consumer spending declined and discretionary purchases like automotive alterations were put on the chopping block. Consumers who continued to invest in car customization tended to scale back the amount they spent on their projects and increasingly opted for lower cost services and projects. Some patrons who still wanted to customize their automobiles chose to handle the purchases and installations themselves, bypassing industry establishments. Between 2010 and 2012, consumer spending has increased, which has resulted in a steady increase in spending on car customization and rising revenue for auto customization shops.

Despite recessionary declines, there have been a number of industry-specific trends that increased demand for car customization shops over the long term. One of the biggest driving forces has been rising pop-culture interest in customized vehicles. Moreover, according to Samadi, changes in automotive electronics and stereos have also driven demand for industry services over the last five years. An increasing number of consumers want premium aftermarket stereo and electronics systems for their automobiles, such as in-car DVD and Blu-ray players, multiple TV screens throughout the vehicle, integrated aftermarket navigation systems, MP3 player and iPod connectivity and Bluetooth connectivity for hands free calling and Bluetooth audio streaming. All of these factors bode well for auto customization shops, with demand for their services expected to grow, prompted by an expanding economy over the next five years.

During the five years to 2017, this industry will remain highly fragmented, with no one company dominating even a regional market. In larger markets, such as urban centers like Los Angeles and Detroit, some shops specialize in subsegments of the industry like airbrush paint jobs. These industry players include West Coast Customs and Galpin Auto Sports, which are both located in California. Companies rely primarily on word-of mouth recommendations for business due to the high-end luxury nature of many customizations. Consolidation has not occurred in this industry for several reasons. Firstly, employees must be led by a highly skilled manager that is responsible for the technical nature of the work. Additionally, companies order parts as a need for them arises. Consequently, bulk orders are rare, eliminating one of the major benefits of owning multiple shops that, in other industries, leads to cheaper input prices for larger players that can buy in bulk.

This industry customizes automobiles. Operators modify cars to improve their performance, often by altering or replacing the engine and transmission. Conversely, businesses in this industry may customize cars to make a style statement for the consumer, making the car look unique and unlike any factory-finished car. Freight truck and trailer customization services are also included in this industry. Remanufactured vehicles are excluded from this industry.

CSU Basketball hosts No. 13 SDSU Saturday in fun-filled fan-first game

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

The Rams (13-6, 2-2) look to rebound from back-to-back blowouts on the road at the hands of Wyoming (70-51) last Saturday and New Mexico (85-52) Wednesday.

Colorado State hopes for some home cooking as they play the Mountain West Conference leading No. 13 San Diego State Aztecs (18-2, 4-0) Saturday afternoon.

The Rams offense looked completely out of synch against the Cowboys and Lobos, and the losses were eerily similar. CSUs shooting, which is among the best teams in the nation, was off due to a lack of ball-movement and sloppy ball-handling.

Colorado State turned the ball over 34 times combined in the two losses, while only recording 13 assists. The Rams have enjoyed a great deal of success by playing team-oriented basketball, sharing the ball and translating steals into transition baskets.

And theyll need everything to click on Saturday afternoon against the amazing Aztecs, who have won 11 straight games overall and are 5-1 on the road this season. SDSU features the No. 1 and No. 3 scorers in the MWC respectively in guards Chase Tapley (16.4 PPG) and Jamaal Franklin (15.2).

Another Cloud Gaming Service Prepared For Facebook Launch

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

The latest success story for cloud gaming is Gaikai, the service that powered the FIFA 12 demo on Youtube, as its poised to launch on Facebook. The news was revealed yesterday at the Cloud Gaming Europe conference in London by Gaikai founder David Perry – who also demonstrated World of Warcraft running on the social networking site without download.

Cloud gaming is a recent trend, where providers like Gaikai, Zynga and OnLive essentially hire out their high-end servers, allowing gamers to play console-grade games on PC, Mac or tablet over the internet without downloads, installs, or updates. The appeal is obvious. Because the games consumers are playing is running on cloud providers servers, even the most aggressively machine-killing games (Crysis comes to mind first) can be played on any platform, regardless of its spec.

Traditional PC gaming has definitely suffered and will continue to because of the onset of cloud gaming. Yesterday it was revealed that Ubisoft (the developer behind the clambering action series Prince of Persia and Assassins Creed) had been placing limits on the number of hardware changes made to the rigs their games are installed on. Almost all developers place restrictions on the number of machines you can install one copy of a game onto, but tech-review site Guru3D discovered that if you upgrade just one component of your PC three times, any Ubisoft games installed on that machine would become effectively worthless.

Companies like Gaikai are offering not only complete freedom from such restrictions, but a much more accessible gaming experience. When showing off World of Warcraft on Facebook, Perry was eager to ephasise it took just one click to get started, once youve set up your Gaikai account. Compared to Steam, with its forty plus clicks, and waves of terms of service agreements and waivers.

What effect cloud gaming is going to have on the industry is still unsure, some developers have made the jump, others are resolutely sticking to what they know. But Perry is confident in a complete conversion: Some of the traditional publishers who have ignored all of this are falling off a cliff. Look at their stock prices, its not good.

State of the State 2012: Sen. Sweeney speech

Friday, January 27th, 2012

-Of course, it is with a heavy heart that I address you today.

-Much has been said about our departed colleague Alex DeCroce, so there is little I could possibly add.

-Ill just say that we cant possibly fill the void his passing has left us, but we can do honor and justice to his memory by working together in a civil and courteous manner on the issues of the day.

-Rest in peace Alex and thank you for everything you have done for the people of New Jersey.

- Being sworn in as Senate President is as humbling today as it was two years ago.

- Admittedly, there were some bumps in the road after that January day.

-Youve read about the more colorful side of my vocabulary.

-You have seen the latest in designer ironworker sweatpants that I have sported from time to time.

-But with all seriousness, I stand before you a little older, a little wiser, a little more battle tested.

-I believe I have taken the lessons Ive learned and used them in a positive manner, correcting myself when wrong, pushing difficult issues when needed, making change when its best for the people we serve.

-Surely some of the more prominent issues fought over in this chamber are no secret.

-First and foremost among them was pension and health benefit reforms.

-It was one of many goals and objectives I laid out that I felt were critical to achieving real change in Trenton.

-Obviously all sides involved were passionate about the issue, because they truly believed in what they were fighting for.

- And, I continue to hold deep respect for those who disagreed with me on this issue.

-Disagreement between us is not a bad thing.

-In fact, its healthy, responsible and the cornerstone of a true democracy.

-And in the end, benefits reform was achieved.

-As a result, we saved the pensions of hundreds of thousands of people in this state, most of whom are middle class folks looking to make ends meet.

-If these reforms had not come to fruition, these workers would have been facing retirement and their golden years without the pensions that were promised to them.

-That is simply a fact…and it was a scenario I was not going to allow to happen.

-While pension reform was for the workers, health benefits reform was for the taxpayers.

-Middle class families in this state were shouldering too much of the burden on this issue and change had to happen.

-And because of the reforms we pushed through, New Jersey taxpayers are looking at a savings of over $120 billion in the long run.

-That is something I am truly proud of, as we all should be.

-And whatever differences that may have arisen have been washed away by the new challenges we face as a legislative body.

-Benefits reform, while at the top of my list, was certainly not the only issue I wanted to tackle when I stood here two years ago.

-I also stressed the need to change our business climate, to keep employers in New Jersey and create jobs for the hundreds of thousands that remain out of work.

-We have taken steps forward on this front.

-Literally dozens of bills have gone through this Legislature that would make New Jersey more business friendly.

-Weve created new financial incentives for businesses to grow and to hire workers; weve improved the tax code for business that keep jobs in New Jersey; and weve passed a number of innovative job-creation bills.

-Weve covered a multitude of areas, from helping minority and women owned businesses, to encouraging better working relationships between our business and higher education communities.

-While I am proud of what we have accomplished, its not enough, and it wont be until our family and friends are all back to work.

-While the wealthiest among us are seemingly flourishing in this economy, the middle class and the working poor continue to see their jobs disappear.

-That is why, simply put, job number one for us must be job creation.

-While we have made progress in some areas, one area I discussed two years ago that has not seen the kind of progress I had hoped for is shared services.

-I called on us to do what we can to shrink the size of government while at the same time making it more efficient.

-I do not believe we have met that call.

-Not that there hasnt been some progress.

-Recently we saw both Princetons agree to a merger of the two towns.

-But we should not kid ourselves.

-That vote was the exception, not the rule.

-The desire for people to see their towns name on a fire truck, or to say they know the local police chief, or for local officials to have total control over municipal services has put a cork in most efforts to share services.

-That kind of mentality is simply no longer economically viable.

-Every single possible way to save taxpayers money needs to be examined.

- A bill Ive recently advanced would help make this a reality.

- It would level bureaucratic speed bumps that slow down shared services and punish municipalities that refuse to save money by sharing.

- Its tough medicine, but its what taxpayers want.

- I know shared services work because I implemented them as Gloucester County Freeholder Director and the result was a savings of over $30 million to the taxpayer.

-One of the most critical services was the implementation of a county wide EMS service that not only saves taxpayers money, but also has actually reduced emergency response times to below the national average.

-It should be noted that shared services do not need to touch county or municipal boundaries.

-Imagine, making a 9-1-1 call for an emergency in a medium-sized town in Atlantic County and a 9-1-1 operator a county away answers and directs immediate response.

-Well that actually does happen in Gloucester County, and has been happening for over a year with tremendous results!

-But please, dont stop there.

-Look at what Gloucester also shared with their municipalities: county wide tax assessing, stormwater management, trash disposal, animal control, and deer carcass removal to name a few.

-Those municipal shared services with Gloucester County have saved over $24 million for its 24 municipalities, which is an average 18 cents off the local purpose tax.

-These are real savings that have real impacts. It can be done. It must be done.

-And that is why it is imperative that we pass my legislation as soon as possible.

-For too long we have tried the carrot without much success.

-Now it is time for the stick.

-And while I certainly will work with all the interested parties on this bill, I will refuse to water it down to any version that does not bring real savings and real results to the taxpayers of New Jersey.

-In addition to benefit reform, our business climate and shared services, there was one additional area I made sure to note when standing here two years ago.

-That is the responsibility of us to look out for the most vulnerable of our residents.

- This was my motivation for getting involved in politics.

- A list of accomplishments on this issue is rather meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

-Because as long as we allow people to suffer;

-As long as we walk by individuals who need help without giving them the time of day;

-As long as we think gee, how awful that is before we change the channel, nothing we do will ever possibly be enough.

- As we move into what will no doubt be another difficult budget cycle, we cant forget those without a voice in Trenton.

-Often we discuss the need to help the middle class, and rightfully so.

-They are gradually being crowded out by a system that is ever more favoring the rich.

-New Jersey certainly has not been immune to this problem, thanks largely to tax breaks for the uber wealthy at the expense of everyone else.

-But still, its how we treat our most vulnerable that matters most.

-I believe I have fought hard on this front over the past two years, with great support from my colleagues.

-But more often than not, differences in opinion have stymied some of things we hoped to get done.

-Earned income tax credits, tax cuts for seniors, womens health centers, services for visually impaired children, funding for our schools, etc., have all fallen victim to bottom lines and politics.

-But sometimes the battle is worth fighting, even if the powers-that-be will do everything they can to prevent you from winning.

-And so this fight goes on.

-The last few months have seen a flurry of activity that we have to build upon if we plan on getting anywhere in this state.

-We must examine the minimum wage here in New Jersey because it is failing to match the needs of those individuals that must rely on it to make ends meet.

-Previously I sponsored a bill that would cut income taxes for middle and moderate income seniors.

-The bill fell victim to the governors veto pen, but it is an issue that must be reexamined in this session.

-And we will closely examine educational reforms.

- This does not mean that Ill cease my commitment to fully funding our schools.

- Every child in this state deserves an education that is not reliant on zip code.

- After decades of faulty funding systems we finally built a formula that stood up in the courts and eliminated arbitrary distinctions like Abbott and non-Abbott.

- Im not about to give up on this formula.

- Not by a long shot.

- We must also address the sorry manner in which we provide aid to our institutions of higher learning.

-The idea of issuing a bond to help fund higher education will definitely be a priority in this new session.

-Finally, as you are all aware, last week we announced that the first bill of this new session will be about marriage equality.

- I am sure there will be contentious debate on this issue as it moves through the process.

- But this is a simple idea whose time is long overdue.

-When history is written, we as elected representatives will be judged not only on how we treated our must vulnerable, but also on how we answered the call from those who cried out for fairness and justice.

-Did we hear them and ignore them?

-Did we hear them and say no, what you have now is good enough?

-Did we hear them and say not now…but maybe latermaybe?

-Or did we hear them and say Yes, the time for equality, for justice, for fairness is here and now?

-The last time this call went out, I ignored it.

-I understand this and take full responsibility for it.

-But my failure to act then and what has happened since calls to mind words that were used to eulogize Doctor Martin Luther King.

- The time (is) always ripe to do that which is right and that which needs to be done.

-Well marriage equality is right and it needs to be done.

-To my colleagues across the aisle, I thank you for working with me on several issues of great importance.

-At key moments, weve been able to get past the kind of bickering that has led to paralysis in Washington.

-And we have served as an example to the nation about what happens when politics is put aside for the greater good.

-I hope we have that spirit of cooperation moving forward.

-To my Democratic colleagues, we remain committed to the principles that have made our party strong.

-We acknowledge that we cant create change without cooperation from all those involved.

-At a time when partisan politics has paralyzed Congress and other political entities, we will work with Republicans when theyre right.

-But make no mistake about our resolve to fight when they are wrong.

-We will never, ever compromise on issues of fairness to working families, those of moderate means, and those of no means at all.

-Together, we have the ability to achieve great things in this chamber.

-Let us not squander that opportunity, but instead rise to meet those challenges head on.

-And lets do it together.

-Thank you again for this honor and I look forward to working with all of you.
